Magnetic Bases for Accelerometers

Field Application Note: Differential Expansion TSI

Magnetic Bases for Accelerometers come in many different shapes and sizes and are used in Predictive Maintenance Programs for temporarily mounting the accelerometer while collecting or analyzing vibration data. In general the larger or heavier the accelerometer sensor you are using the more holding or pull force in pounds (lbs) you will need. The shape of the Accelerometer Magnet needs to be selected based on what you are mounting to. Two pole magnets are best for curved or round surfaces such as bearing housings although they also work on flat surfaces. Flat magnetic bases provide the best results but should only be used on flat surfaces such as ferrous accelerometer pads such as STI's CMCP200M or CMCP200MP or other especially prepared flat area. The mounting thread or integral stud is selected based on the accelerometer you are using. Using magnetic bases reduces your accelerometers mounted resonance frequency (see chart). For best possible frequency response and repeatability permanently mount your accelerometers to the machine with mounting studs and use a local BNC Junction or Switch Box such as our CMCP300 or CMCP310.
